High in Peru’s Andean region, the wife and husband team of Sebastián Gaucha Huamán and Doña Lucila Gaona García are producing phenomenally delicious coffees at their El Roble farm.

The Huamáns and El Roble are at the cutting edge of environmentally friendly organic growing practices. Coffee plants at El Roble thrive under a canopy of shade trees that enrich the soil, producing an elegant and beautiful cup.

The Huamán family are members of  the region’s Pumurco community, and have a profound connection with their environment. Since 2010, the Pumurco community has led the fight against open-pit mining in the high mountains. The disastrous mining projects contaminate the headwaters of the region’s main rivers, which supply water to the entire Piura region. Because of their fierce opposition to environmental degradation, the locals are known as “The Guardians of the Páramo”.
